Title: Virgil Thompson, Music For The Films
Post by: Bill Epstein on March 28, 2015, 07:48:23 AM
Here's Thompsons most famous works, The Plow That Broke The Plains and The River performed by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Neville Marriner; Angel S-37300.

You may not be familiar with the Composer but you'll recognize at least some of the tunes which, written for The Agriculture Department during the Depression, have been adapted and plagiarised over and over in American theatre and films. Aaron Copland has cited Thompson as an inspiration, as well.

The performances are first rate and the recording just the thing to show off those single-ended, directly-heated, direct-coupled masterpieces we build. "Real instruments performing in space", indeed.
