Since there have not been any responses to my post I am moving this diversion from the "step up transformers for moving coil cartridges" thread.
I obtained a Linn Asak MC cartridge recently. It came (as a bonus?) with a Linn Ittok tonearm that I wanted for my LP12 TT. It seems to work well still so I am considering options A) to nurse it along by purchasing a step up transformer or B) putting the $ into a moderately priced higher output new cartridge. (These SUT discussions are way over my head, and it makes me think I should stay in the MM or high-output MC world.)
first I thought I should determine whether the Asak stylus still has life. Pictured below for comment on condition is the stylus. The condition of the pointed portion appears smoothly curved with no flat surfaces. Questions in my mind include, how much of the pointed part of the stylus are in contact with the groove? Do I need a more powerful magnification to zoom in on the tip / point of the diamond?

Why don't you ask this question on the vinylengine or vinylasylum forum? They specialize in vinyl and have regular posters who can better answer your questions.

I only see one place that looks like wear, the very shiny place near the tip. I don't imagine that that would damage the audio portions of the groove if it is wear.

I will do so. And thanks to all for looking. I think the bright spot nearest the tip is where it is most in focus.

If that is just being in focus the stylus looks great! I couldn't take a picture that close even with my camera's Super Macro mode.

Okay, I've finally posted to http://www.vinylengine.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=228172#228172 (http://www.vinylengine.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=228172#228172)

There are a couple of threads here where PJ gives the formulas for matching a transformer to your phono stage and cartridge. The math is no harder than algebra but it requires knowing some information like the impedance your cartridge wants to see and the input level your phono preamp needs for a good signal to noise ratio.

I have collected the formulas and put them in a file. If you PM me I will cut and paste the info and send it back.

Thanks. I really appreciate your offering, and I'll p-mail you about that. Is it essentially the same content/workflow as shown on the online calculator at the bottom of Hagtech's page http://www.hagtech.com/loading.html (http://www.hagtech.com/loading.html)?
I'm still leaning toward the Picollo kit at http://www.hagtech.com/piccolo.html (http://www.hagtech.com/piccolo.html) .

I've got a Piccolo that needs a home. If you're interested, send me a PM
