Yesterday I brokered a deal between two friends. We listened to Bob's Technics DD table then used the same cartridge shell in a Thorens TD-124 with an SME 3009 II.
The Thorens just stomped the other table. Bob is a drummer, he loved the drive and dynamics the Thorens brought to the music.
This TD-124 looked new. I have never seen one in this good a condition before.
Just had to rave about the sound. Idler wheels are not bad at all.

It's a great table! I sold mine and haven't looked back. If I were to do an idler over again I would try and Empire like Dan has. The others have gone over the top in price.

My Empire is belt driven from a Papst motor, no idler wheel.

Belt! How did I have idler stuck in my head. Well, the 124 is a great table if you can find one for cheap!

Yes the 124 is a classic. I've had two over the years. Interesting comment about the dynamics vs a DD turntable. I had a Denon DP-6000 DD that made me decide to sell the last 124 I had because of better dynamics. Over the years I have found it difficult to relate the sound of a turntable I really like to one particular type of drive system. There's so many different parts on a TT that influence the sound. It's enough to make a person want to switch to, I don't know, maybe reel to reel tape.
