I thought I'd post my settings here, I thought they could be of help since this is a popular tool.  It's not closed loop temp control, it's open loop heat control, so you have to do your own controlling.  I use 4 settings for all the stuff I do;

2)  Idle.  When I'm not actually soldering anything, this is where I park it.  It's just high enough to melt solder but that's about it.  It's good for not ranking out the tip.

3)  PC boards.  3 is hot enough for this job.

4)  Good for all soldering of wires to lugs except chassis lugs.  Also good for tinning heavy guage speaker cables.

5)  Chassis ground lugs.  Short path to thermal sink.  Need a lotta heat.

I never use setting 1, just turn it off.

Excellent tool.  For best life, don't keep it on past 2 when you are not actually soldering anything.  If you do then you will have to wet sponge wipe and re-tin a lot as the tip will get black and nasty fast.
