Title: Power cord for Australian 240VAC (10A wall sockets)
Post by: oztayls on July 30, 2023, 01:21:47 PM
I'd like to make some cords for my gear. I can get some nice hospital grade Australian plugs and some straight and angled IEC connectors that are lockable with a plastic insert to prevent them coming out.

Also, I'm just checking that the wire needed is the stranded type, not solid core?

From my local electronics store, I can get 19AWG 7.5A wire or 17AWG 10A wire. Because we twist them in pairs, I'm thinking the smaller 19AWG 7.5A wire will be preferable or else I might run into trouble fitting them into the connectors? I think this would still result in a 7.5A rated cord would it not, as the individual twisted wires are rated at 7.5A?

You probably want to use stranded wire for a power cable, solid could be unwieldy and possibly prone to failure if it gets moved around.

Even a single run of the 17 or 19 AWG will be more than  sufficient for your  current needs, Just use a configuration that makes you happy....John

Double 19 is going to be plenty on 230V mains.
