Title: Power switch alternative
Post by: lina on September 11, 2020, 12:23:35 PM
Instead of the supplied rocker switch, I'd like to use a rotary switch. I saw somebody post the ratings for what they thought was the stock switch in an old thread, and if they're correct I think this switch should be good (SPST, 125V, 12A - AC). Just want to make sure tho. Thanks!

If you're outside of the US, the 125V rating won't be enough.  The body of the rotary switch is going to hit the IEC power entry module if you try to put it in the same hole, but if you're planning to use a rotary switch from the start, I would wager that you're not using the panel we provide.

Yeah, I'm getting a panel milled. :P I am in the US, but I'm actually looking at emigrating. What voltage/amperage ratings should I aim for that wouldn't fail elsewhere?

I'd look for 250V/0.5A as a bare bones minimum for a 240V app, 1A or better for a 120V app.

The startup transient current can be pretty heavy - it's only for a moment, but it's the exact same moment you actuate the switch. I'd look for 5 to 10 amps to ensure longevity.

Some countries require switching both power lines. That may not apply to home-built things, but I though I should mention it.

But you'll need to find a different online seller. Digi Key has no stock and a minimum order of 54 units  >:(.

This might work, but don't take my word for it. It is in stock and 1 is the minimum order.
