Oh, I only have the one GE 6as7g from the kit. Sorry if I made it seem like I had more. Is smoke a possible failure mode for a bad tube?

We have no idea what's smoking and why.  Generally you would check the voltages to see what's incorrect.  If this was happening but isn't now, it could be debris in the amplifier that was causing a short but has been dislodged, or some other bits touching that shouldn't be, which have now been moved apart. 

I have never seen a defective 6080 do what you're describing, so I believe it would be a mistake to assume this is tube related.

To be fair you are the one that said it could have been a bad power tube not me. Nevertheless it is running correctly, so thank you for your assistance.

You can get a bad 6080 that will draw down the power supply and make the 270 ohm resistors in the power supply discolor, crack, then blow.  The writing on yours still looks perfect though, I don't believe that failure mode is at work here.
