Hi everyone,
I am new here. Recently, I just bought used Bottlehead Crack from online deal. It was send to me via cargo with perfect packaging. Once received, I check the condition visually and put both tube on it. I plug it to 110v wall and on it. Everything looks good initially, both tubes are glowing up and no abnormal sound. Suddenly, after 10-15 second, smoke coming out from the crack. I disconnect the power cable from the wall plug straight away and wait for the smoke disappear.
After some time, I check the crack to find out what just happening. I can see the 220uf 250v from 20,21 got leaked it fluid. its smell burn and blown outward little bit. What should I do now? the seller do send me the soft copy of manual thru my email. But I just cant figure out where should I start to do a troubleshooting. There is any suggestion for me to order the spare part thru online? I live in Saudi Arabia and I have very limited source from local store for electronic part.

Can you send the Crack back to the seller?
Can you post pictures of what you're seeing here?
-
I can send back the crack but it will cost me almost same amount with a new kit (without build) consider the shipping cost and custom fee from here to US and US to here again. I attach some picture here. I might consider restore again the crack but i need to figure out the problem 1st and find a way to order the parts online.

How about the rest of the amp?

I attach more picture for the amp

OK, everything looks OK other than that cap. Are you absolutely sure you plugged it into a 120V outlet? (It's not wired for 110V). If you plugged it into a 220V outlet, we would expect this exact issue. There is nothing otherwise wrong with the amp visually.

There are 2 wall power outlet available here in saudi arabia. one is 110v for normal appliance and another one is 220v for heavy usage like AC, Heater or fridge. I plug in the extension cord to the 110v and the plug the power cord of the amp to the extension cord. I accept my fault that I did not double confirm the voltage output by using multimeter. I keep asking the same question to my self from that day, really its is 110v is coming from that wall outlet> :o
Yes, the seller did mention to me its wired to US 110v. I plan to rewire it to 220v but when I look at the page 26 on the manual, I cannot figure it out since in the manual, the power transformer in the picture is quiet difference from what I have now. (PT10)
should I do resistance check? can anyone guide me to rewire this amp to 220v?

You need to remove all of the 220uF 250V capacitors and throw them away. They are all compromised.
You need to buy a digital volt meter and measure the actual AC voltage you have available, I can just about guarantee it is way above 110V.
Lastly you need to get a copy of the manual from the seller of the kit. Based on your prior post you have a manual that doesn't go with the kit you have.

I will start figure it out during my off day. I have a basic digital multi meter and some china made soldering tool ;D. will keep update the progress here. I ask for the manual from the seller during our deal, but this is the only manual he was given to me via email. any chance to get the copy of manual from Bottlehead? or i have to buy a new kit to get the manual?
-
You would need to purchase the manual from us. The seller would get a download link when ordering the kit and would have downloaded the manual. I would press the seller harder to be provided the correct manual for your kit.

I already email to replacementpart at bottlehead dot com to purchase the manual. Also at the same time asking the seller again for the manual. meanwhile, I do some google to find the part for 220uf 250v capacitor. as per link below, can I use the capacitor for the replacement?

If you can possibly get the UCY 220uF 250V caps, I would recommend those.

After some googling..I found this on mouser..please advice.

Yes, that's UCY 220uF 250V.

Thanks,
Proceed with the order. cost me 40 bucks for shipping only. haha ;D Bottlehead also already respond my email regarding the manual. hopefully I can put it all together by the time replacement cap receive.
-
We could have sold you the caps and shipped Priority International for $30.

I will ask thru email, together with the manual purchases to the contact person at bottlehead. Just a quick update. I check the voltage outlet and confirm it is 230v. :'( now i should know what is the reason.
I blame myself why i did not check for the voltage first before plug in. Now i need to rewire the amp to 230v and hopefully can be done once i purchase the manual.
