Hey all,
I believe I got the crack working. Most voltages and resistances looked good with a dmm.
I find it really quiet when connected via AUX cables connected from Scarlett 2i2. Is there a way to boost the volume with this setup? The potentiometer (volume knob) is turned all the way right. Thanks!
Also I don't see the LEDs on the bottom side of 12AU7 lighting up, but the upper tube 12AU7 is definitely lit.

Actually playing the potentiometer more.
When turned ALL the way LEFT (it is more loud, but only left channel works w/bass)
When turned ALL the way RIGHT (it is quiet, both channels play with no bass)
Is it supposed to be volume knob?
-
And unplugging the Red RCA doesn't do anything, the left side of my headphone still plays.

Double check your wiring on the potentiometer and the RCA sockets.
And the wiring for the 9 pin socket.
It may help to post pictures.

attached are some pictures

Please have a second look at your volume pot and compare your wiring to the manual.
It's hard to tell from the pictures. But it appears to have a shorted input.
Further. Do note the "WHOA! Soldering lesson!" page in the manual. Make a physical connection; attach a lead; before soldering.

If most voltages look good would indicate some don't. Do post them here and don't use the Crack with headphones before they are good.

Thank you, i totally missed the black wire not going to the upper lug (top image of pg 34). The volume is all taken care of now and the LEDs are on.
I'll spend the weekend fixing up the humming etc.

Actually i'm using a Hydria Model 2 power conditioner. The Crack sounds lovely and stunningly clean, I'll install the speedball next week!
-
I would get a pair of proper side cutters also to help trim back all those leads poking out. The CHP-170 is less than $10 and does an excellent job.
-
I'd recommend to first get rid of the hummmmm before you start the Speedball upgrade.
-
good ideas on trimming the leads, I solved most hums with a power conditioner. But there's humming on the right channel if i turn the amplifier volume all the way down. I wonder if its the amp or the computer wires.
-
Does this go away with nothing plugged into the Crack?
-
With RCAs unplugged I hear buzzing on max volume.
-
Also the buzzing changes when I move the AUX cable about

Yes, you'll get buzzing with no cables plugged into the Crack and the volume cranked all the way up. What I'm wondering is if you have the volume control all the way down and nothing plugged in, is that silent?

Turned all the way down with RCAs unplugged, quiet as night. Both with/without power conditioner hooked in.
