Title: Help with headshell
Post by: aragorn723 on January 29, 2025, 11:57:56 AM
So I'm finally pulling the trigger on a Technics SL-1500c after 9 years with a UTurn Orbit.  I want to buy and extra headshell to mount a London cart, but don't know much about headshells.  What should I look for?  Apparently some of them don't have azimuth adjustment?

Key Features to Look for in a Headshell

Azimuth Adjustment

Not all headshells have azimuth adjustment, but it's essential for cartridges like the London, which can be sensitive to alignment.
Look for models with a set screw or mechanism that allows you to adjust the azimuth to ensure the stylus sits perfectly perpendicular to the groove.

Material and Weight

Headshells come in different materials (aluminum, magnesium, carbon fiber, etc.).
Check the weight of the headshell to ensure it matches the Technics SL-1500C's tonearm and balances well with your cartridge.
London cartridges are often lighter, so a mid-weight headshell (7-10g) might work best.

Connection Type

The Technics SL-1500C uses a standard SME-type bayonet mount, so make sure the headshell is compatible.
Build Quality

Opt for a well-constructed headshell to avoid issues with resonance or vibrations. Reputable brands include Technics, Ortofon, Audio-Technica, and Jelco.

Ease of Use

A headshell with clearly marked overhang guides or adjustment slots will make setup easier.

Recommended Headshells

Technics Headshells (OEM)

Technics offers high-quality headshells that are well-matched to their tonearms and usually feature good build quality, though they may lack azimuth adjustment.

Audio-Technica AT-HS10

Lightweight aluminum with good build quality. Lacks azimuth adjustment but is affordable and reliable.

Ortofon LH Series (e.g., LH-2000, LH-4000)

Solid build with options for azimuth adjustment in some models. The LH-4000 is particularly good for more advanced cartridges.

Jelco HS-25

Known for its azimuth adjustment and robust build. Slightly heavier but offers excellent compatibility and adjustability.

Sumiko Headshell

Offers a balance of adjustability and weight. A good all-around option for higher-end setups.

Thanks for the detailed response!  It will probably take me a little while to digest, but I appreciate it.  Can't wait to feel out on cartridge install  ;D

How about this headshell, would this be good for the SL-1500 and London?  It has azimuth adjustment and weighs 10.9g.

The HSE23 looks pretty good, is the Allen by the connector the Azimuth adjustment?  Have you run these before?  I 'm assuming the Technics needs the 1 lock version?

Technics will accept 1 or 2 pin. Yes, the Allen bolt is for azimuth. I do have the carbon one and it works very well.
