Title: DIY Interconnects
Post by: BNAL on March 16, 2012, 04:10:25 PM
Doc,

I remember awhile back you were playing around with building ICs. Did anything ever happen with that? If memory serves me correctly you were using different gadge signal wires and they were shielded.

Bottlehead used to offer what was named "NAWA" interconnects. It was sold in kit form and the kits came in different lengths. I don't see them offered on the product catalog anymore.

Correct, those are no longer available.

I know that the cables you offered are no longer available. These were never sold. It was something you were experimenting with.

I' m building up some IC's as well. I'm curious about the use of different gauge wire for signal and ground, what's the theory behind it?

Brad, all of my interconnects are diy. Someone told me about DH Labs Silver Sonic BL-1 cable in bulk, so I gave it try. It is excellent cable for the price, (silver plated with good shielding), for a little over 2 bucks a foot. I terminate them with either Cardas rhodium plated right angle or convemtional rca plugs. They sound great and are much cheaper than factory ICs. Soldering to the Rhodium plugs requires alot of heat, otherwise building the cables is a piece of cake.

Cheers,
Shawn

Where did you find BL-1 for a little over 2 bucks a foot? The best I've been able to find is more like 4.

Hey Grufti, I purchased the BL-1 at www.audiophileanswers.com. I purchased it at $2.47 a foot some time ago. I just looked at their site, and you are right it is now $3.99 a foot. Sorry about that but it has been quite awhile since I purchased it and I bought a large amount at once. Honestly, at $3.99 it is still a good bang for buck bargain.

Cheers,
Shawn

I've used the BL-1.  In fact, I have some in the main system, been there for probably close to a decade now.   I never was very cablecentric and never really could afford to be anyway.  Im happy with the Canare these days, either the shielded twisted pair or quad, depending on what it's for.   Not suggesting that it's the cable to beat all others but if you want to experiment on a budget, it's all of 50 cents per foot.

Andrew,

Thanks for the links. That is what I was talking about.

Shawn,

I will have to take a look at the BL-1.

All my cables are DIY and I need another cable.

A year or so ago I made up 3 sets of these:

One set goes from my VPI Scout II to my Phonomena phono stage. One goes from the phono stage to my Stereomour. The other connects my Linn Genki CD player to the Stereomour. I used Cardas connectors. I am very happy with the results. I don't think I would every buy tailor made (commercial) interconnects again.
