Title: Balance pot location
Post by: johnsonad on May 05, 2012, 10:17:05 PM
I'm going to play around with a MQ Ingot type design gaining parts before the new 300B preamp is available(P&G volume pot, Elma selector switch, rare Sony balance pot, 10k/10k nickel trannies).  My question is, when adding a balance pot in a passive preamp, does it go before or after the volume control and is this the same with a standard preamp?

Thanks,

Aaron

Since both volume and balance affect the incoming signals it could be either order.  I have most often seen it volume first balance second.

Just think it through, balance pots don't work the way you think they do.  There is a right and left side (deck).  Better yet install the balance using jumpers so you don't waste a quarter pound of solder.

If your going to build the Ingot, I would see if you can get by without a a balance control. If you need one it might be better to use 2 seperate volume controls, rather than one dual contorol...John
