Title: OT - Anyone into watches?
Post by: Doc B. on December 17, 2009, 05:20:02 PM
I have put a fave of mine up on ebay. After working on restoring it off an on for a few years I recently snagged some final parts I needed from a watch guy in the Netherlands. With those parts I got it up and running - at least when laying down. It apparently needs a watch maker to make some adjustments to fix the one final issue it has, which is that it wants to stop if it hangs vertically on your wrist. A gentle shake starts her right up and it will run for many hours laying flat, so it should be something a guy with the proper tools can tweak pretty easily. I know my limits, and they stop at getting into those teeny bits in the movement. I hate to admit it,  but I have just lost my momentum on this project, right as it approaches completion. It really is a cool watch, and I forced myself to put it up on the bay today, before I started wavering.

This watch is pretty rare, I have yet to find a picture of one like it, though I have seen two that look similar.

My favorite watch the last few years, at least in terms of the way it is built, is one I cannot imagine ever laying down funds for...
F.P. Journe's "Chronometre a Resonance". A fabulous idea, in my opinion. It has two totally symmetrical movements in the same case. I tend to like his designs for other watches as well.

The other new brand where I find interesting ideas is MB&F.

Yes, I'm definitely a WIS.  I have about a dozen right now.  Also accumulate cameras, lenses, cutlery...

When my sister worked for Baume and Mercier, I had a nice watch of the type that we used to call "self-winding" but I have a government job, and I couldn't keep the damn thing wound up and running.

While I am not a timepiece aficianado, I do like a decent timepiece. My daily watch is a Wenger with large numbers and large date. This way I do not have to fumble for reading glasses to tell what time it is. I have always been fond of the design and style of the Swiss Army and Wenger brands. They are now rolled up into one company.

My latest purchase is an Invicta Russian Diver's watch. Damn, this thing is like a mantel clock for the wrist. At 52mm in diameter and 17mm thick, you know this thing is on your wrist. It is my 'statement' timepiece. Since I wear the watch on my left arm, the crown has a tendancy to develop a callous I never had before.
