Title: "Cigars, Cigarettes, Tiporellos?"
Post by: 4krow on September 18, 2012, 03:22:14 PM
Well, a new plan has emerged. I'm trashing the conventional (read way out weird) box that I was making, and going right downtown with a beautiful cigar box. It's wood, that counts, right? Photos to follow in a few days. And yup, got the quickie running with the mono volume controls. So far, sounds to be on the dark side.

Hey Greg - congrats on getting sound from the Quickie! Probably needs some 'burn in'. I would say 20 hrs should give you a good idea what its going to sound like, with the tubes you are using. From what I remember, during the early burn in, the tube choice made a bigger difference in the sound. A bright tube might sound better now (GE?). Everything may sound a bit 'narrow'. Chokes open that up, but can muddy things up a bit vs. the PJCCS or resistor. Let the tweaking begin! - Let us rise - to the god of mod let us bow our heads. To thee we ask for thy guidance and wisdom! We ask for the wisdom to know the 'difference' from the 'difference'. And the wisdom to know the difference! - Let us pray -

fancy cigar boxes are on their way. They will be judged one at a time for appearance, size and cool factor. My box got out of hand, so I am turning to the wooden cigar fare.

I have very close buddy in Portland OR.  He never smoked in the 60s, 70, or 80 that I ever saw.  Now he smokes cigars.  Go figger!

A couple of visits back he sent me home with 2 cool looking boxes.  I'll post a picture this afternoon.

Ok, I may have a box on the way that will fill the bill. Youall see it when the time comes. In the meantime, i have a thought/question: The quickie is not turned on until the heater filament is switched on, but does this have any benefit, such as 'standby mode' for the circuit?

Hey Greg -

My thoughts on leaving the Quickie on -  You will go through batteries quicker obviously, and probably tubes to some extent, although It has been said that the tube life is in the several 10's of thousands of hours. As far as better sound with warm up, I have heard the sound of my system get better with some warm up time (30 min to 1 hr). I cant know what component, if not all of them, is benefiting the most from warm up. - Eric

Granger - those are cool! I think you and Greg are onto something. Are you thinking of drilling holes in the top and using the entire box. That would be way trick!
