Hey Xavier,

What were you into before 2000 in terms of rock?

Hi Xavier,

Here's one vote for Ramble at the Ryman and Electric Dirt, each by the Levon Helm Band.

Best,

Mike

Hey Gang; After setting up our pottery at the Glen Richards Gallery here in Seattle, my friend Ken Pincus and I walked over to Dimitriou's Jazz Alley and took in the first set of Taj Mahall's show there. The house sound system was normal(means bad), but the old duffer really rocks, and "Corinna" brought tears to these similarly old eyes. Taj was a favorite for me since the late 60's, and he still is. Guess I've gotta oreder up his newest release, "Hidden Treasures". The venue could use some of the Bottlehead magic dust, however.

Now to enjoy the gallery opening from 4 to 8 tonight! Please say hello if you attend this event.

Cheers, Hank

FWIW, I have been in love this past year with ALL of the  (american band) Coheed and Cambria albums (maybe get your feet wet with "Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness" first) .... a Welsh band called FEEDER (you can start with 'Comfort in Sound') , a Geordie band "newcastle" The Wildhearts (The Wildhearts Must be Destroyed).... and 2 superb albums by Denmark's Pretty Maids (Pandemonium) and American band House of  Lords (World Upside Down)....... enjoy

Hey Xavier,

When I think about the past decade, the White Stripes stand out as a popular but interesting band.
One of my favorite recent bands is "St. Vincent".
The album "Actor" that came out a few years ago is a great intro to the band.

Tons of interesting stuff some more challenging than others. For indie music, it's worth browsing around Pitchfork.

The Black Keys are very popular lately - they are "low fi" on purpose so you might not care for them.  I like them a lot and sort of feel bad that they have been "discovered".

Of course, I should be used to that.  I seem to have a knack for buying albums way before the general public does.  Some of my past discoveries include: Nirvana, Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls, Soul Asylum, Gin Blossoms, Black Crows, Urge Overkill, Prince, U2.  Of course, I have a lot of bad albums too!!!

I've been having a dry spell lately and haven't found much new I like, but then again, I haven't been looking because I've been so busy with other things.  I'm going to keep my eye on this list.

Rock for the holiday season wouldnt be complete without Trans Siberian Orchestra from Savatage's super producer Paul O'neill and members of Savatage... And speaking of Savatage, ALL of their albums in the '90s are terrific to downright masterpieces.... Many songs and cds are based on true events and inspirational people.... they have really matured as a rock band in the 1990s...

Another female vocalist you might like is Cat Power. More of a fresh look on old standards but the album "The Greatest" is a real fav of mine.

For most of this stuff, it's easy to "preview" their music on YouTube. I often stumble across other cool music by browsing the suggestions they give or the comments others make.

Also MySpace Music is a fantastic way to audition often times entire collections... a MUST try for people who havent yet.... Just type the band in the search section and it will display popular songs and then below there is an album section, click on that and then your album of choice and away you go...

Thanks for the suggestions. Keep them coming! My trip has left me exhausted every single day and obviously have not had much time to listen to music. And I've dozed at flights so it looks like all the time preparing for the experiment was lost. But the real essence of it: opening the mind a listening to new things has worked. I just let go the idea of analyzing each album and now I'm enjoying them a lot.

Today I finish my 30 meeting week at 5 European countries and on the weekend I'm off to the second leg in the US east coast.

At some point I thought all the vinyl I had brought via my cassettes sounded terrible. Last night I noticed the Dolby switch had disengaged (and these are Dolby C cassetes). I tried a couple before going to sleep and they're not bad. Not at all!

Saludos

Well if you were in Denmark, Pretty Maids' new album Pandemonium would have kept you awake.. :)     and also... "I just let go the idea of analyzing each album and now I'm enjoying them a lot".  I dont know about the rest of the bottlehead bunch, but I fall into that trap also MANY a time, and "gall darnit!" (this is a family forum) I enjoy analyzing at first maybe, but then we just have to let go at somepoint, kick back and JUST ENJOY!!!!
