Title: Oh brother, snow, brother!
Post by: Doc B. on December 19, 2012, 04:22:18 AM
Woke up to a couple inches on the ground and a s***ton falling out of the sky. Some freeway ramps near us are closed. Will be poking our heads out of the burrow and making our way into the office as the roads allow.

Funny, same here in Boulder.  It's been super dry here this season so we're finally glad to have some moisture.

Josh and I managed to make it into the office today, though it involved unintentional hitchhiking...

Stay safe guys!  Thankfully snow doesn't last long on the west side.

Yep, we had that same storm through Tucson - no snow here, but the Catalina Mts. have a foot or so. I dig the mountains when they are all white - as long as I dont have to shovel it!

And I live in the lake effect snow area in Northern NY and we still have green grass showing.  Very strange weather

Hey Deb - a 'shout out' to Watertown - I was born and raised there! WHS class of 1975.

And I went to collge in Rochester and once snow fell in October or november, we usually didn't see the ground again until late march.

Watertown was my stopping point on the drive back home from summer hockey leages in Northern Ontario so that would have been 75 and 76.  Can't say I saw anything much more than the HoJo motel though.

I lived Rochester, (Pittsford) for 5 winters, 3 years!  Loved the area.  Visited Watertown and the Adirondacks regularly.
Visited Ontario far more often.  Other side of the lake = sunshine!!!!

Cheers,

I've lived in Watertown for around 16 years, and the winters seem to be getting milder and milder every years.  I used to have 5 to 6 feet of snow in my yard most of the winter.  Last year I had more bare ground than snow cover, and this year is starting off the same.

If anyone is ever up this way contact me.  We can drink some wine and play with Bottlehead stuff

When I was studying at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, in the mid-80s, we got tons of snow.  I remember cross country skiing from December through late March all over the Kingston area.  When I went back for grad studies in '89, we only had skiable snow once in the two years I was there.

I live in the Ottawa area now and we are a hard core cross country ski family (son is on the Ontario team this year), so we are acutely aware of changing snow conditions.  Our season is getting shorter and shorter.  (Although we did get a good dump on Monday and more is on the way.). Not to get all political or anything, but those who deny we are experiencing some form of climate change aren't paying attention!

To Doc and the gang - stay safe!

Steve,

Yes, when I was in Rochester -- late 70s/early 80s, I lived several miles off campus in an area that was mostly farm fileds, and cross country skiing became my favorite workout/decompression pastime.  I would go out at late night and sometimes just ski aimlessly for hours.  The genesee river also ran about 100 yards behind my apartment, and ehen it froze, I would also ski up and down the river.  Good times -- back then when I could not only handle it, but actually enjoyed the cold and vigorous workout.

7 years in Ithaca, not far from Rochester. Loved the snow.

After 4 years in South Carolina, I'm happy to be back in snow country in PA. Except that my driveway is REALLY long, and I don't have a snow blower  :'(

What I always liked about skiing on a frozen river,or rails-to-trails path, was the fact that you can just "go" without paying too much attention to what you're doing.  Here in Ottawa we have a National Park in which the roadways are closed in the winter and groomed for skiing.  I'll be there in about 6 hours for practice with the racers in our club.  A great way to decompress from the headlong charge into Christmas ...

Interestingly, a friend of my son's is on his first year of a cross country ski scholarship at St. Lawrence U in Canton, NY.  Guess where they do all their training these days...?  Ottawa!

I too have a Rochester and Watertown connection.  I went to SUNY Brockport 1973 - 1977.   I actually made it through my 1st semester without a hat or gloves (Looking back, how is that possible?).  The coldest day I ever remember was one January during that time period.

The wind-chill was something like -45 degrees.  It was in-between semesters and we went out for beer and donuts.  I remember taking a glove off for like 5 seconds to get a newspaper out of one of those old-style vending machines.  My hand almost froze off!

One of my friends was from Watertown - Antwerp to be exact.  I believe his father worked at the nearby Canadian border crossing.

I'm surprised how many Bottleheads have a Northern NY connection.

There are a ton of 'audiophiles' from NNY for some reason. Dont know if its the alcohol, and the long winters? A bunch of great audio companies there as well.

I started with Kodak back in 1980,  my company is still based there.

I remember my first trip to Rochester. It was 7 degrees out and snowing. A week later it had gone up to 8 and was still snowing...John

Good old Kodak! - I went to the Univ. of Rochester. I will say, though, Rochester got the shit for weather compared to Buffalo and Waterclown. Rain, overcast, crap on top of crap. I think at the time, the suicide rate in Rochester was the highest in the country. Not sure if that was true...

Eric,

That's why I had to leave -- the weather was so terrible so much of the time I honestly couldn't deal with it any longer.  Now of course Boulder is about the polar opposite and yet I find myself looking forward to and enjoying rainy and snowy days.  Go figure.

I actually really liked the area. I could almost survive the two seasons, winter and construction.  But being a native Californian the lack of sunshine definitely got to me. They report minutes of sunshine on the weather, not days....not a good sign.

Cheers,

Hey Eric,

Yeah, but you guys have some wild-ass electrical sttorms down there, which in recent years are few and far between for us, especially where we are -- only a couple of blocks east of the mountains.  On the other hand, being this close to the mountains means extremely low possibility of a tornado touching down -- those happen further out from town for the most part.

Looks the same here, only we got about three times as much!  Trees and branches down everywhere.  A friend of ours lost power on Friday and has been told it won't be back until the 29th!  The irony is that he ordered a generator 2months ago but just prior to delivery it got diverted for hurricane Sandy relief!

Merry Christmas to all.
