Title: Best place for switch for speakers
Post by: FraGGleR on March 30, 2013, 07:19:40 AM
Currently the speaker taps are not hooked up in my S.E.X. 2.1, but I want to see how well they work driving my bookshelf speakers.  I have a locking Neutrik jack and a Neutrik 4pin XLR jack installed for headphone use, neither of which have a built in switch.  From an impact on sound (if any), where in the chain would be the best place to place a simple switch?  I have the impedance boards and the C4S board in place, FYI.

Thanks!

Switching at speaker level is the least offensive voltage level to work with.  Switching sources is much more critical.  So I would do it at the amplifier output, after the impedance switch and before the output connections.

I'd just unplug the headphones.

If you need to actually wire in the speaker posts, wire them to your 4 pin XLR jack.

It would definitely be simpler to do that.  Would it not be better to split from the output of the impedance board to reduce the length of the runs?  I will do whatever maintains the highest fidelity for the headphone jack since that is my primary listening method.

I don't think I would bother, but you could certainly try it both ways and let us know if you hear any difference (we do keep track of data like this).
