Title: ClarityCap SA 100uf 630V film caps on sale
Post by: adamct on May 22, 2013, 04:57:08 PM
MadiSound has 100uf ClarityCap SA 630V film caps on sale for only $40.17. By contrast, PartsConnection charges $87.62 for the same caps. But be warned, they are effing ENORMOUS.

Just thought I would pass this on for anyone who is interested...

Best,
Adam

Has anyone been successful at shoehorning a pair of these into a Crack/Speedball with the standard top plate and base?

I fit a pair of 100uf ClarityCap ESA 250V caps into my Crack. I had to raise the case a bit, but it worked. The 100uf SA 630V caps look to be about the same diameter, but longer. I think they would fit.

EDIT: Disregard the above. I recently installed a pair of 100uf ClarityCap SA 630V caps in my Quickie, and had the chance to compare them to a 100uf ClarityCap ESA 250V. The SA 630V caps are considerably longer and wider. I'm no longer convinced they would fit in the case. ........but don't let that stop you from buying them! Figuring out a way to make oversized caps work in your build is a big part of the fun!

Best,
Adam

I need some 10uF@630V and they are $92.  I'll have to hold off a little longer.

I was looking at these:

http://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/mr-cap-630vdc/claritycap-10.0-mfd-mr-range-polypropylene-caps/

Those were going into my Paramours with upgrade MQ iron.  Which page are you on?

Oh, wait!  You are looking at the ESA page.

Which is better, ESA or MR?

In theory, the MRs are better. But it sounds as though most of the construction of both series is the same, with both reflecting the results of ClarityCap's research on reducing vibrations. The benefits of the MR sounded pretty limited to me, but what do I know...

In any case, Madisound won't carry the ESA 630V going forward, so this is a great chance to pick up some of those caps.

Adam

I am going to jump in here as well.

I am rebuilding my SR-45 with EXO-45 and Dowdy chokes. If I remember Paul"s formula correctly, I need a about a 10u parafeed cap.

I am currently using a 6.8 Obbligato with the old config and I am looking for a step up, or maybe just a change. Not going to spend stupid money...John

I may pop for the $40 caps today.  And maybe, down the line go for a higher priced cap.

I bought one for my Quickie to replace the 1,000uf electrolytic. As a bonus, the SA ClarityCaps are red, as is my acrylic top plate. Hmmmmm.....maybe I'll mount the batteries on the underside, and the cap on top! That way I can hide the batteries, and show off the cap... ;D

I did it, bought the lower priced cap.  Of course it cost more than the $8 I spent for the Obbligato Polypropylene Film/Oil caps 5+ years ago.

Opted for UPS delivery, $2 more than FedEx, because of FedEx's history of losing my shipments.  For a pair of caps Madisound should have a USPS option for ~$4.

Sometimes, even I, think I'm being too cheap!

Both ESA and MR are great caps but there are differences between them.  The most notable is with ESA the uppermost treble is just a bit darker which makes for a very smooth and still detailed presentation.  The MR on the other hand is clean and clear top to bottom with excellent detail and dynamics.  In my sex amp I actually preferred the ESA because they better matched my AKG-702.  The MR's were a bit too revealing for those cans.

Not sure if you guys have seen the new Mundorf 'EVO'. I ran into it online the other day when I was searching around for something. It seems to test/cost in the same league as the Clarity SA, except they have an oiler that might be a good match for a coupling position. It apparently does mids real good. Kind of like their other oils. Might be a good choice if the Supreme is too pricey in the high values.

For another project I picked up a pair of ClarityCap ESA 630V caps. One is .1uf and the other is .22uf. Yet the .22uf caps are smaller than the .1uf caps. Can anyone explain why that would be the case? I would have expected the opposite. Do you have to use some sort of different/bulkier technology as you get into very small values?

Best,
Adam

Caps do usually get bigger with larger values. Hard to say why a smaller value is actually larger than a larger value of the same cap, unless the larger value cap is lower voltage rating. Might want to ck that. Not that it really matters, but you may have paid for the 650V and got something lower!

Is the small one metalized film and the large one film and foil? Are they both the same plastic?

A quick note.  I received the Clarity Caps while out of town.  Break in will commence tonight or tomorrow.

Be careful with the Claritycap wires. I snapped one off trying to straiten it out. Thankfully Madisound replaced it and the new one is on the way.

Paul,

Nope. Both are polypropylene. As far as I can tell, they are identical in construction and specs, except the 0.1uf caps are bigger than the .22uf caps.

And I'll second the warning on the ESA leads. Happened to me with one of my 100uf caps when I was building my Crack. Since the insulation on the lead was intact (making the break invisible), it took me forever to diagnose the problem...

Best regards,
Adam

Did you measure the caps with a dmm? Maybe one or the other are mislabeled?....Just a thought.

Funny that you ask that.  The Clarity caps I got were two different labels.  Both say Clarity, but one label is tiny compared to the other.  Here is the picture:

My replacement cap showed up yesterday and both are in and running in my S.E.X.  I had to solder on extension wire to get them to reach!
