I'm close to Campbell and can bring my garage gear:
Frugel Horn and Sexy Spkrs, HD 600 headphones
Thorens Turntable
Crack, Quickie and Seduction
for amps, EL84 SET. 45 SET and if I can cure the hum a 2A3 SET.
I've also got some power strips and extra cables made up I can bring by.
Alonzo
-
Alonzo, thanks for offering to bring so much gear! I'd love to hear the difference in tubes between your different SETs. The extra cables may come in handy too.
-
Joel,
To avoid duplication on the Crack headphone amp (since Alonzo will bring his), why don't I bring my Hifiman EF5 instead? Alonzo's Crack will be good for high impedance cans and my EF5 can be used for either high or low impedance and has enough power to drive orthos as well.

Oh man. Sooo close, but no cigar. We are driving to The City on a family vacation next week, but we have to leave on Saturday morning. Maybe next time.
Congrats on getting your BeePre sorted, Joel!
-
Wow this sounds like alot of fun! Molly and I will be in Portland that day but I'd love to visit the next one.
Joel - feel free to call me some time to compare notes on optimal Orca speaker placements in room. As you are a pro audio engineer I'm keen on your impressions.
Cheers,
Clark

Hello,
Brand new to this forum and this is my first post. I just ordered the SEX 2.1 last night and look forward to my first build. Used to live in South Bay, am now in Berkeley but would love come by. I can bring a nifty portable set from chord, their chordette line, a preamp, amp, dac, headphone amp all in a rack and custom engraved with "Google" (makes it sound much better, much like black makes cars faster).
*edit*
None of this gear is tube, so let me know if that's a show stopper. Or could be a fun comparison.
Oliver
-
Oliver,
I think you are confused. Red is the fastest color.

-
Well, it's hard to argue with that! ;D
Oliver
-
Hi Oliver,
Yeah bring along your Chord gear. It should make for a nice comparison.
I think I'm going to have to set up a separate headphone listening area in the garage. Not sure my living room is going to fit all this equipment!
-
Hey Joel,
Just wanted to let you know that I'm looking forward to attending your shindig!
And it looks like you already have a full array of gear so I'm not planning on bringing anything myself. But do let me know if that's incorrect or changes.
-Randy
-
Randy, glad you can make it! Yeah, its looking like we'll have more than enough gear to try out.
-
I would suggest attendees bring some music they are familiar with.
-
I will bring a Marantz CD player along with my well traveled SEX amp and home made chocolate chip cookies. So bring your CD's! Looking very forward to Saturday.

Homemade chocolate chip cookies?!? Oh, I'm definitely there!
-Randy
-
Remember to bring snacks that encourage good listening etiquitte - cheese, bread, fruit, and baked goods rather than nachos, buffalo wings, and celery...
Not for the annoying sounds made post-digestion, but to prevent loud chewing which can distract from the music.
You'd better believe that:
We Are Incredibly Strict About our Listening Etiquitte at Castle Blumenstein! ;)

Cary's cookies totally ROCK.

Cary's cookies totally ROCK.
You're not joking, that giant batch he sent up lasted only a day or two!
Cary, did you get your new SEX amp built?
-PB
-
Yay cookies!
I just sent a PM to those that are coming with instructions to my house. If I missed you, or you didn't get the PM, let me know.
-
I have been working on some home improvement projects and finishing up on a 13EM7 amp. I hope to start on the SEX amp towards the end of summer. Also have been doing some machine work for a friend.

Hey! It's today. I'll check back before bed tonight (EDT) and see if there are any reports.
-
Thanks everybody for coming! It was great meeting all of you, and I got to hear some really wonderful things (and eat some really wonderful cookies!). I'll try to put a few pictures up soon.
-
Thanks to you, Joel, for opening your home to a bunch of strange guys, er, ah, a bunch of strangers I mean. ;) Seriously though, thanks for hosting this gathering. Was a lot of fun, a bit educational, and was great to see and hear all the various gear that showed up. Oh yeah, and it was also great to meet some fellow SF Bay Area Bottleheaders! Wouldn't surprise me if both Bottlehead and Blumenstein Audio received some additional orders from NorCal soon.
-Randy
P.S. Skip, it was great to reconnect with you. It's been a long time since we hung out at VSAC 2001 together.
P.P.S. Cary, it was great to meet a fellow SF Bay Area Bottleheader and rangefinder shooter. And thanks again for the cookies.
P.P.P.S. Alonzo, you clearly took the prize for "most willing to transplant multiple audio systems from one's home to another's." Not to mention being in the running for the "Aw what the heck, let's try this ONE MORE tweak to this amp/preamp" award! ;D
-
Many thanks to Joel for putting it all together. A fun time was had by all! Doc and all the Bottlehead staff would be very proud to hear all the comments about their gear.
Randy, it was also fun to talk with you about cameras and audio, thank you for the kind words about my Fostex speakers.
Also glad to hear everybody enjoyed the cookies.

It was a fascinating afternoon. All full range drivers with the semi-exception of the Orca subs. It was my first chance to hear the BeePre and the Paramounts. A nice selection of headphones I had never heard. I enjoyed Alonzo's heavily modded might-once-have-been-a-Stereomour, and several beers. They go well with cookies. I was pleased to note that the age profile was tilted a good deal younger than most such affairs where it doesn't seem like there are many below 45 or so. I have worried that our hobby might be wasting away as those of us say 50 or older became less active, but I feel better about that now.
My one mission was to establish a frame of reference for the Paramounts. I thought they had to be better than my standard amp, and, of course, they are. Now I have some handle on the differences. It was great to see Randy again and to make new acquaintance with the rest who were there. I hope we can do this from time to time. Joel, thanks a bunch for your kindness, generosity, and effort.

Thank you Joel for hosting. Very nice of you. It was a fun afternoon.
-
Thanks Joel for having us over. Very impressive set of gear assembled there. Your Orcas and subs were awesome sounding, as well as your LCD-2's.
Lots of other really great sounding gear and enjoyed meeting other enthusiasts. Lots of knowledge and DIY contained in that room (and the garage!). Appreciated everyone taking the effort to bring their stuff.
-
Joel, thanks for having this "meeting of the ears". It was great of you to host and great to hear your system. Next time we'll have to break out the vinyl!!!
-
This is a new post on an old thread....sorry about that.
Would anyone kindly compare the Frugalhorn with alpair drivers and the Blumenstein Orca? Curious about imaging/warmth/bass extension and anything else you may observe.
Thank you.

Are you looking to hear these in the SF area or looking for a comparison?
If you want comparisons you might be better off posting a new thread in the speaker folder.
