Title: Nuts are too big for Octal Socket (p.13)

Dear all,

I am building the Crack right now, and am on page 13. I have to use a bolt and nut to hold the octal socket in place. However, none of the nuts that came in the kit (that I see) are small enough to fit in the brace (hold-down bracket) for the octal socket.

The terminal doesn't fit into the brace either (so I'm assuming it sits under the brace?). In any case, am I just doing it incorrectly, or should I go out and buy my own nuts that will fit into the brace?

4-40 is the size you are probably looking for. Bottlehead will send you some, if you ask but a quick trip to Home Desperate. or wherever will get you going for about a $1

Hello Pepper,

Do the nuts fit the small screws supplied?

Sometimes the retainer brackets need to be bent out just a tad in order for the nuts to slip in, but they will be held from rotating by the bracket.

Thanks a lot for all your help guys. It turns out that it wasn't the brace needing to be stretched; I was actually just missing the nuts from my kit.

I did go to Home Desperate (hahaha) and was supplied some very overpriced, tiny nuts and bolts from a very lethargic, large French man (in fact, the cashier accidentally put in the parts numbers wrong and charged me $105 for them. I thought they had to be some like crazy, plutonium screws or something and thought that was the secret to the Crack's allegedly amazing sound).

This is all to say that the construction of the Crack has been somewhat more arduous than I expected. Even some of the soldering is hard; the pieces are very tiny!

Paul is it ok to widen the retainer brackets considerably? I widened them a bit since the #4-40 nut wouldn't even fit initially, but there isn't enough room for the nut to be rotated for tightening. I am pretty sure these are correct #4-40 that were included.

That's the beauty of the design.  The bracket holds the nut and all you have to do is tighten with a screwdriver other side.
