Title: Incorrect mounting of tube sockets. How to fix?? (Thus the username)
Post by: sexgonewrong on September 21, 2013, 09:06:41 PM
Hi All,

First time poster, first time DIY builder, first screwup (so far). My soldering skills should be rated at an optimistic 10/100.

I was building the SEX kit with Passionforsound (on the forums) and while it tested well in the beginning, we hit a huge roadblock.

The mounting for the left tube is 180 degrees from the suggested position and the right is 90 degrees from its position.

Needless to say the measurements are out of whack.

I have soldered everything on so where to next? Desolder and build? send it to Bottlehead?

while being 180 degrees and 90 degrees out of position may work well in the Kama Sutra-
it is truly sex gone wrong in a audio circuit--desolder and start again slowly and carefully in the proper position and love, life and happiness will follow

I'd desolder and fix it.  You may need us to send you some resistors, a cap or two, and some additional shielded twisted pair wiring.

You can also snap the bases off the 6DN7's and manually line them up, but that will probably lead to other issues down the road.

Let me understand this, did you put in the sockets in the wrong position and soldered all your wires to the wrong pins?

If so follow Paul's (Caucasian Blackplate's) advice.  You need to rewire all the tube connections.  I think to eliminate confusion you should also rotate the tube sockets to the standard position and follow the instructions.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the advise. Already started the desoldering process.

Just wondering if there is an easier way to desolder everything or any particular sequence to desolder as the tube sockets are heavily crammed.

As for sequence, desolder the top most component and work down.  If nothing is on top, start at one end and go around.

I use solder wick, others use a solder sucker.  I have used both but with my soldering iron the wick works quickly and well.

Thank you everyone for the advise.

Started undoing it slowly and lets hope it turns out alright.

Let me know how you're going and we'll get together again next week to see if we can redo it just right!
