Title: Smoke when using Chatham 2399 / Tung Sol 5998
Post by: sjeffrey on October 06, 2013, 02:38:34 PM
I have stock crack the seems to be running fine with stock tubes.  I have tried rolling a Chatham 2399 and after a few minutes I get smoke.  The first time The Crack was closed so I couldn't tell where the smoke started from.  I put everything back to stock and Crack is fine.  2nd time I propped the plate up so I could see underneath.  It seems the smoke is from the power cord area.  Any ideas what could be the cause?  Is it a bad tube?

Thanks,
Steph

Yes if it smokes when that tube is installed that tube is the problem. Stop putting it in there or you will damage the amp.

Fair enough.  Just finished (and started) my build this weekend so I wasn't ready to call my amp "stable" yet.  Figured maybe this particular tube drew more current or something and might cause a bad solder joint to manifest itself.  Waiting for 2 more tubes to arrive.  Hopefully those 2 will work fine which would be further proof that the tube is bad.
