Title: Speedball problem
Post by: jwrossie on January 22, 2014, 06:35:57 AM
Hello BH's,

Last december I got my BH Crack with Speedball package. I solderded the Crack and it sounds great.

Today I wanted to improve the Crack and I was ready to install the Speedball.
Accidently I soldered the MJE350 in place of the TIP-50,  same component but slightly different.
I came to the conclusion that the TIP-50 transistors are missing.

Thankfully I could save the MJE350

I have used both a solder sucker and solder wick to remove components.  Each have the application that is best.  I would start with solder wick and see if you can wiggle the heat sink out of the circuit board.

Heat one side and get some slack, then the other side and get some slack... you get the picture.

You would need to heat up an MJE350/TIP50 for a long time with a soldering iron to do any damage, so I wouldn't worry about that.

You can leave the heatsink soldered to the board.

Thank you very much!

I am going to solder the MJE350 to the smaller boards. I know for sure that I didn't overheat the MJE350's.
The heatsink, I'll give it another try to remove it.

The only problem I still have are the TIP50's. I didn't receive an e-mail from Eileen yet.

Are there a lot of different TIP50's? With different specs?

There are very few TIP50 varieties.  I don't see any reason why any of them wouldn't work in the Speedball.
