Edited a year after getting the Eros:
I am not there yet. I'm there now. When I had Paully's Eros here I used my Grado Sonata-1 (5mV) through his Eros and it was wonderful! The noise was considerably lower than with my Seduction, it was a barely perceptible whisper. The volume was so much higher I couldn't believe it. I had to turn the volume down 1/4 of a turn.
What are the rest of you with an Eros using? What is the output? How well does it work in your system? Any noticeable noise?

30 views and no replies?
Paully, I thought you would wade it.
Doc, or Paul, or Paul?
(that was a bump)
-
I have a Denon DL-103R, output is .25mV. I think it works pretty well, I bought it based on good reviews and price.
-
I am using a Rega Super Elys, with output well over 5mv. (I will be switching to SUT's and a LOMC sometime sort of soon)
-
Anyone using a Denon DL-110 or 160? I am seriously considering those with my Rega and Eros. I may save up to buy a woody Grado Platinum Reference but that is $350. That may take some time and I may get too itchy and end up with the Denon. At the moment I am just excited to have a Best Mint protractor coming so I can dial my Shure in better and see what that does.

Steve,
Did you change the input resistor in the Eros to match the 103's preferred load, use an SUT? Is there any additional noise, or noise that bothers you? The 0.25mV is lower than the suggested, though higher than the 0.1mV Doc said they had used successfully.
Paul, and Paul, Thanks!

Definitely interested in this thread as I just purchased a Grado Reference 1.5mv. I am hoping to be able to order a Eros kit this week and will post results of the Grado on both Seduction C4s (if not sold by the time Grado arrives) and the Eros. Glad to hear people using lower than .5mv on their Eros's!!!

Yes, I changed the input resistors can't remember the values will need to measure, I'm also using SUT's. I really don't think I have it right yet, there seems to be a lot of varibles involved. The noise level is very low but then I have replaced all the tubes, I can say for certainty that everytime I turn the equipment on it sounds better, I guess everything is settling in, wish I was getting better with age.

I just upgraded my Grado Red (bad hum) to a Benz Ace (2.5mv, the blue one). Holy cow! Good stuff.
-
With Eros' extra gain I will bet you have virtually no noise. Do you like the Ace?
-
I really, really like the Ace. I have about 6 hours on it now, and maybe 8 on my Eros. Both will get better from here, and honestly that's hard to grasp given what I hear at the moment. Eros is dead quite. I'm super pleased.
-
Hey Paully: Denon DL-160 here. Can't say enough about it. Output as low as you really want to go with the Eros, but that's just me.
-
The Denon was as low as I was considering without a step-up transformer, and I have no intention of doing a step-up transformer. I see others in the thread use lower output and are happy but I think I will stick with Doc's recommended output. But cool, glad you like it. I think it is what I will end up buying.

A Soundsmith smmc1 and soon a Cartridge man music maker classic Le

I have heard and read good things about the Soundsmith line, I would be interested in hearing your impressions when you get the Music Maker.

I use a wooded Denon 103R with mine as well, but I've done no mods. The noise floor is much more than I would like, but it still sounds so much better than the Rega Exact (HIGH output and no noise) that I used before. Are you saying that swapping out a resistor could help without having to figure out the SUT business?
-
Dent,
PJ has posted some formulas that help you select loading for MC cartridges and SUTs. There is a reflected load back to the cartridge that damps the ultrasonic resonance that is typical of the MCs.
Check out these two threads:

Hi
Is anybody using Benz Micro Glider SH with Eros phono stage? If yes - what tone-arm are coupling it with and what is your impression on sound quality.
According to specs its outpot 2,5uV and recommended load 1-47 kOhm, so I assume it should work with Eros just fine.
I am currently using Denon 110L - very good high-output MC cartgidge for its price and wirking good with Eros.
But I am going to upgrade my front end sometime early next year - and I was seriously considering this Benzcartridge - so if anybody can share an opinion I will appreciate this.

Trying several:
Denon DL-110
Dynavector 10x5
Shure V15-Type III with original stylus & with JICO "SAS" super-eliptical stylus & boron cantilever
So far, liking the Dynavector the best.
Using VPI Scout turntable, stock VPI JMW-9 arm
-
And now I am using a Grado Sonata-1 in my VPI HW-19 with mine. But alternately I use the Denon DL-103C on my Dual 1219 through the Denon SUT.
-
For MM it's a JICO MM-1 cart with SAS stylus and for MC a Lyra Kleos to a Pioneer H-Z1 then Eros.
