Title: Now I listen to headphones because I want to! And stock 6080 alternative
Post by: Nathan on June 01, 2014, 02:29:29 PM
Until recently the only reason why I ever listened through headphones is because I had to- ie, it was late and I don't want to disturb people. My first set of cans were Koss HV1a's which I loved. I listened through a vintage Pioneer receiver (since I bought the receiver new that makes me vintage too).

Later came a pair of Beyers which I never really cared for. Then a set of AKGs through I think a Creek headphone amp. Then I got a par of 701's which were driven by a Heed Canamp. All the while, cans were a decidedly 2nd choice.

No more! With my HD 600's and bone stock Crack, I listen to my cans because I wat to, not because I have too. The Crack with the HD 600 is just that good!

But I can't leave well enough alone. Cardas replacment cable is on order for the HD 600's. I have a NOS Mullard 12au7 on its way in. Now if only I can find a 5998 not crazy priced ( not tempted to spend over $100) I'll be all set.

Or does someone have another reasonable suggestion for a stock 6080 replacement that won't cost a mint and isn't in the land of unobtainium?  (Woo suggests a Tung Sol 7236 as an upgrade to the WA3).

Check the tube rolling thread, its the longest thread here.  Look for a nice 6as7 I found vintage RCAs for about $20. Tung Sols are very good too, and cost a little more too.

I've looked at the thread. It's too long!

Grab a couple of RCA 6AS7G..Its a beautiful sounding tube to me. I don't think 5998s or premium 6080s are worth +$100
I'd gladly sell you a tung sol 5998, unfortunately I'm in Mauritius
