Title: Help needed to clear solder pad

Hi there,

I feel bad.  On page 26 of the manual I inserted the 33k ohm resistor where the 215 ohm resistor should have gone and totally forgot to install the 215 one....on both PCB.

I had to desolder the 33k resistor and it (both) broke but now the pad areas I can't get the remaining leg out.  Basically, the leg doesn't have anywhere to get some plyers on but the pad is closed.  Does anyone have any ideas.  I need to get new 33k resistors but I can't put anything through the hole.  I have tried solder wick to no avail.  Does anyone have any ideas.

I usually go slow and feel really bad about this mistake :(

Will I need a new PCB and components?...

My suggestion is to heat the pad until the solder in the hole becomes liquid and then push a separate piece of solid core wire through. That will displace whatever solid material is in the hole. Afterwards, you apply some heat to the wire and pull it out. Hope this helps.

A spring actuated solder sucker can clear those holes for you, and they don't cost much at all.

This is easier if there are two people.  One heats and the other inserts another resistor lead into the solder pad/hole.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I am going to go and get a solder sucker and hope it works better than the wick that I have been using.

Over the weekend I will try to get that pad opened up.  If that fails I will try the solder with partner method.  If that fails ....a trip to the electronics shop and spend some $ to get it fixed up.  Nothing that money won't solve eh? ha ha ha. ;)

Yeah, just be sure not to get the solder sucker that has the rubber squeeze ball, those things are terrible!

lol must seem strange to outside people  8)  If you do get the sucker (i kind of like them) squeeze the bulb first and hold it, then heat your joint (oooooh boy here we go again! it only gets better) and put the sucker next to the joint, and let go.  It will usually take out all solder at once.  The only downside is that sometimes the nozzle clogs, but that can be cleared with a paper clip or something like that.

These are the best solder suckers in my opinion, the main body is made of aluminium, the tip is made from a heat resistant material, and when fully depressed a metal rod pokes out to clear any solder. It just works, and will last for years.

The blue plastic body ones on eBay are utterly useless, i have tried them, they dont have as much suction, the tip is too big to focus the suction where you need it, and it also melts.  The shiny silver ones on eBay are better, but again the tip is far too big to be of any use.

If you are refering to a piece of copper broken off in the hole on the PC board, and all else fails, I would try using a numbered drill in a finger dril holder and twirll away by hand.

I feel like a sucker and a little bit like a squeeze ball.

I got a solder sucker and tried to get that piece of the resistor out of the spot.  I have failed.  I have tried heating the pad and using another resistor to get through the hole and failed!

I don't really want to try the drill trick because I can see an epic fail coming.  :o

I have found someone that will correct my mistake.  He has fixed my laptop ac connector port when it broke.  I feel bad because I would really love to do it myself but can't make it work.  Oh well.  I will get him to check my solder connection on the pcb to make sure all is well.

Thanks guys for your suggestions.  I much prefer point to point than pcb.  :)

One last thing to try, add some solder to it.  I know it sounds daft but i have fought with bits of metal stuck in holes that wouldn't come out no matter how much i heated it.  Sometimes if you add a bit of solder, then suck it off again the part will come out.
