Title: Transformer: Cosmetic damage during shipping?
Post by: shaun.meyer on December 13, 2014, 06:40:46 AM
I was going over my parts a bit more closely now that I'm almost done with the finishing work on the case and noticed that my transformer has some cosmetic damage on two of its sides and I'm wondering if this is anything to be concerned about, or anything that might warrant a replacement as "damaged in shipment."

I've tried to capture some pictures of each side:

I believe that is the so called "goo".
A surface treatment to prevent rust that often has some smear.
Mine also has that, I didnt go through with sanding and painting, though, as it is hidden behind the 6080.

I guess fine sanding and rustoleum would do the trick?

That's the varnish that holds the transformer together.  You can paint over it if you like, and many builders will just blast the lamination stack with some black paint.

You're right; I see it now that this is just some dried goop on the side. I sanded it off with some high grit sandpaper and painted the sides.

At first it really did look like the transformer had been dropped on its side!

Thanks for your advice!
