Title: OT - Bonneville in the 50s
Post by: Doc B. on July 12, 2015, 07:26:04 AM
This is so cool in so many ways, from the Speed Racer car to the chase plane footage to announcer Jack Siegal doing his best impression of the voice of Ed Herlihy, the announcer that did voice over on all the newsreels when I was a kid.

Cool video.  No lights and push starting! The only way to defeat "Lucas, the Prince of Darkness!"

Thanks for sharing!

The reason the British drink warm beer is because they have Lucas refrigerators.

This reminds me of the movie "The Worlds Fastest Indian" If you haven't seen it I recommend it...John

What's fascinating to me is looking at recent videos. Though some cars go up to 400mph now the starting lineups look similar to the way they did in the 50s and they still push start many cars because of the tall gearing. The cars are much faster, more sophisticated and safer - but the event seems to have the same aura it had 60 years ago.

Here's another fascinating newsreel, of the Golden Arrow which went 231mph on Daytona Beach in 1929.
