Title: Tube rolling again
Post by: mkane on July 14, 2015, 08:30:02 AM
Purchased a few at7's from Jim McShane. A Raytheon NOS White box 1958 grey plate  'horseshoe' getter & GE NOS from the 50's grey plate 'rectangular' getters. Some like tt's, some like cd's. I like 12at7's and have quite a stash. I'll report back after a few hours.

Well those Raytheon 12at7's are quite nice but, Jim also has some military boxed 12at7's that really sing. They're so good I ordered 3 more. Not cheap but these are the best to my ears so far and I have a hell of a selection of 12at7's.

Isn't that the tube that was in it when I sold it to you Mike?  I thought it had a Mullard military...

May have been. It was a Mullard thats a fact. Think I gone thru 10 or so different 12at7's and this combo shines. I have the quickie ahead of the Stereomour, more so just for kicks to see if I could build one of these kits. I've bought every kind of DL92 I can get my hands on and Sylvanias seem to be the best as far as  noise floor is concerned. Very quiet indeed. Is the Paramour that much better as far as sonics are concerned. Those military boxed at7's are $38.50 a pop. I now own 1/2 a dozen. Should last me well into my 70's.

Well, I could tell you that there is almost no difference between the paramounts and the stereomour... But I'd be lying.  ;).

I know it is a big step up price wise, but they may very we'll be your last amps!  The BeePre is REALLY nice too; I'm spoiled.

Bee Pre will be my next build. First up is a new roof for the house before it rains.

Sounds good.  The BeePre is a loooooooooong build compared to the other kits I have put together before it (Stereomour and S.E.X.).  So make sure you have comfy place to build it with good lighting.  Also, if you don't have a set of helping hands with magnifying glass, you should pick some up at Harbor Freight for $10.  Well worth it!

Time is on my side. I just nee to slow down and breath in. My wife and I have turned an unused room into a hobby room of sorts. She sew's and I build stuff. Lighting is excellent and I have one of those 3rd hand gizmos. Just need a bigger magnifier. Now after reading 'all' the previous threads on the Stereomour I considering on building a 'Submissive'. I'm going to need a bigger shelf for gear.

I have no experience with the submissive, but with other passive preamps.  I went from a passive preamp to the BeePre, in fact and based off that experience, I would skip the Submissive and go straight to the BeePre.
