Title: Crack works well! After upgraded speedball smoke [resolved]
Post by: paulusho on September 14, 2015, 03:58:22 PM
I received my Bottlehead Crack DIY kit and has no problem to put it together and loved it. But after I upgraded the speedball on the Crack and power on the AMP, I found out there is some smoke coming from a capacitor located at Terminal 14 - 15. May I ask how can I trouble shoot this issue. Any help is deeply appreciated.

Check the mounting of the TIP-50 transistors to the heatsinks.

WoW! You are really AWESOME!
I checked the mounting of the TIP-50 transistors to the heatsinks to confirm that I didn't slip the "FIBER WASHER" onto the bolt to cause a short (One of the "O" grounded on the large PC board) between the TIP-50 and heatsink.
After I followed the instruction to mount the transistor to the heatsink.
ISSUE GONE!
Previously, I slipped a metal washer (Came with the package) instead the fiber washer onto the bolt.   >:( >:( >:(

The Crack is running for 4 hours with the speedball and I didn't experience any issue.
:-)

One more question. Do I need to worry about the capacitor on T14-T15? Should I replace it or any other components on the Crack or speedball?
Because there was some smoke came from that capacitor.

BTW, I completed the resistance check and voltage check to confirm that all the values at terminals were good.

Seeing new issue after the AMP ran another few hours.
I heard the left channel has humming noise when I set the volume to 25%. The right channel is working fine...
Is that related to the capacitor located at T14-T15???
Should I replace it or I need to perform more test to determine the issue?
Thanks again for any help and kind attention to this matter!

It wasn't the capacitor that was smoking, it was one of the 270 Ohm resistors.

Hi Paul,

Thanks a lot for your advise.
I will replace both of the 270 ohm resistors to test it again and share my result with you ASAP!
 8) :D ;D ;) :)

I replaced both of the 270 ohm resistors and the capacitor located at T14-T15.
After that the CRACK worked well with my HD650 for the passed two days.
No humming noise from the left channel.
Another HAPPY CRACK builder/owner. ::) ;D :D ;) :)
