Title: Good headless music players for MacOS/OSX?
Post by: oguinn on June 11, 2019, 10:40:35 AM
I'm currently running an old iPhone as my digital audio source but have been thinking about swapping in an old Mac Pro tower I have sitting around instead so I can control it remotely and access a bunch of old files I have stored on its hard drives. I've been looking at some music players but was wondering whether anyone here had some they liked. I've heard Roon is good, but $120 on top of the Apple Music and Spotify subscriptions I already have seems pretty steep.

Jameson,

I have been running (an old version of) Bitperfect for about 4 years. I got it on the App Store for $9.99. I think a newer version is now available, I don't know the cost. This has worked much better for me than Ammara, which was a lot more. Bitperfect accesses your I-Tunes Library and plays the files through Bitperfect for much higher quality playback.

I assume that wouldn't pull from Spotify or Apple Music, right? It sounds like it pulls from your library files.

Well, my old version won't but you should check out the new version. 4 years ago the world was living in the Download Model, now it's the streaming model. So, maybe the new version will play through streams, I really am not sure.

Hi

I recently went down the Roon route and also subscribed to Qobuz (CD quality). Never looked back and all CD's went into the basement. The way Roon organises and presents my library is fantastic. In my case this setup is more than offset by not buying CD's anymore. There is a free trials available for both.

Hope it helps.
