Title: Original Quickie - PJCCS problems [resolved]
Post by: rangerman on June 17, 2020, 04:47:15 AM
I just fitted the PJCCS kit to my Quickie but have lost one of the channels (B tube side). It is an original model Quickie and I had done the wiring mod for the reversed polarity of the D cell batteries. The Quickie was working perfectly prior to fitting the PJCCS. I have double checked the wiring as per the kit manual and all the soldered joints are good. New batteries were also fitted. The fault does not follow the tube and my amp and speakers both check out ok. Voltage measurements are as follows:

IA/IB  35.5/35.5 V
OA/OB  34.8/23.5 V
A5/B5   3.1/2.2v
A6/B6  23.5/ 34 V

Does anyone have any idea what the issue could be? Any help is appreciated as this one has got me beaten.

Cheers,

Chris.

Can you post some photos of your installation?

You have a couple solder joints you could touch up. The A side MJE350 needs more solder, as does the smaller resistor near the B side.

It looks like you might have a solder bridge -- see red circle.

cheers, Derek

You need to reflow all of the solder joints on that board.  Look at the A side MJE350 from the top of the board.  Notice how there's no solder wicking up around the transistor legs?  That's a 100% indicator that you need to reflow those joints and heat them till the solder flows through the board.

Thanks for all the replies - I’ll reflow the joints and let you know the outcome. Cheers,

I just reflowed all the joints and success! All is good - the Quickie sounds fantastic now! I guess the lessons from this are that I have to purchase a magnifying glass, and I need a new prescription for my spectacles....Thanks for your help guys, I’m a happy camper again.
