Title: Volume control range very limited in my setup
Post by: ccmccull on November 03, 2021, 09:40:06 AM
Hi all, I'm loving my new moreplay, but I have a small usability question. In my setup driving a Schiit Vidar with Spendor 3/5r2 in a smallish room, I get to ear splitting volume at around 5% of total pot rotation. Still crystal clear! But too loud for my taste. I can make this work, but it does take the tiniest adjustments to dial it in.

Any suggestions? Should I consider a passive preamp/volume control after the moreplay? Or should I modify the output stage in the moreplay directly?

By the way it's like this for both my dac and my phone preamp input.

Thanks for the tips

Can you triple check that you have the proper pots installed in the proper holes?  If you accidentally swapped the 10K log and 100K linear pots, you'd likely end up with the situation you're observing.

Thanks for the tip. I just confirmed by resistance checks that the log pot is on the volume and the linear is on the balance.

Also I don't have any off balance issues which I'd expect if I swapped them.

If it makes a difference, I might have embellished a bit on the 5%. Ear splitting is more like 10%

Simplest solution would be inline attenuators between the Moreplay and the Vidar. Try maybe 12dB.

Thanks! Is this what you're referring to?

Hi all,

I have the same issue. I ordered this one:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/PAIR-Harrison-Labs-FMOD-12dB-audio-attenuator-rca-in-line-level-reducer/391074869008 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/PAIR-Harrison-Labs-FMOD-12dB-audio-attenuator-rca-in-line-level-reducer/391074869008)

I'm not sure if I bought the right attenuator. What do you think?

Regards,

Mauro

I used the Parts Express 12db attenuator in my system. Solved the problem.

Thanks for the help. I was just wondering if the attenuator should be placed betwen my dac and the moreplay, instead of placing it between the moreplay and the power amp.

You could try placing it both at the input of the Moreplay and at the input of the power amp.
