Title: Almost Completed Kaiju
Post by: BenjaminSmith on April 19, 2022, 02:09:24 PM
I'm ecstatic with the way the kit has gone together.  It's almost there; I'd be listening tonight if I hadn't done something stupid and vaporized the two LEDs on the A side of the C4S D side board...

The build here is 20s retro/Greene and Greene. Chassis is of barrel stave oak (the color is from the inside of the barrel), ebony and rosewood. More glowing and underside pics when it's complete.

This looks crazy!

How did you integrate the VU Meters into the circuits? Is there any change on sound because of them?

Looks like some interesting design elements on the chassis plate, not to mention the base as well.

Driving VU meters off the speaker outputs wouldn't be too bad.

Please, what are the black boxes around the transformer and the plate chokes?
Do they have a function?

They are transformer covers and are used for cosmetic purposes.

Ben, for a mechanical engineer, you are a darn good artist! It looks great!

Wao…how does one hook up the meters? Can you share.
The instructions? The wood work is outstanding.

Thanks.

My next build will likely be a SEX amp, and I am contemplating changing the look of the facade by adding covers to the transformers/chokes and a little bit more.  Are there any thermal considerations I need to be aware of before adding covers like these?

I haven't measured it, but the plate choke gets pretty warm. That's one of the reasons it's on top.

The big consideration with covers is that you're almost always going to need a custom top plate.
