Title: Bass driver amp
Post by: John Roman on August 25, 2011, 03:53:22 AM
Seems lately I've got all kinds of time on my hands and plenty of projects going. I try not to spend to much time with one before coming up with another. Keeps my creative juices flowing.... lol. After way to long I think I can actually see a light at the end of the tunnel, as it were, to get my BassZilla open baffle speakers finished. The bass cabs have been sitting in my garage for a couple months, conservatively speaking. I've been putting  off finishing them due to a lengthy ordering process for the new tweeter I'm planning on using. I upgraded the ribbon tweet to an Aurum Cantu G2 with the round housing. That took about 50 emails to get done along with 5 months of waiting for Parts-Express to special order them. BTW, without Bev @ Parts-Express this would not have happened. My cap is off too them and I couldn't recommend them more highly. She is right up there with Eileen, just down to earth good people. So what's the question you say, I'd like some suggestions on bi-amping these speakers. A separate pair of mono-blocks just to handle the low end perhaps. The 15" Definimax driver is passively crossed at 250 hz and the bass cab it tuned to 38 hz.  I'm currently using a pair of Paramont 300B's and an Extended Foreplay 3 to amplify all drivers. I want to dedicate an appropriate pair of mono-blocks or perhaps stereo amp to just the bass drivers. Simple enough right ? Suggestions are welcome. For now the passive crossover will be retained but am eventually looking too an active tube based electronic crossover. Yet another project, I'm going to need a bigger work area! As always this forum is a great resource and your insight is appreciated.
Regards,
John

The last improvement to my system was adding a pair of modified Karlsons for bass duties below my midbass horns. Following a friend's recommendation I'm using a McIntosh Mc 275 below 80hz. This is the best bass I've heard in my system (and probably the best I've heard ever).

I never thought I'd have a McIntosh! I've tried it fullrange and can't believe how colored it is. But for bass, OMG!

I'm currently using a pair of Reckhorn active crossovers. I'm sure I can do better. Originally I was thinking a pair of Marchand passives (I'm driving the crossovers with a Sex amp so impedance is not a problem) but now that I dialed in phase I'm convinced I need something with adjustable phase).

... adding a pair of modified Karlsons for bass duties ...
I have a pair of K12s I've been looking for something to use them for. I put in EV LT12s, and it's ok.
What mods / driver did you use for just low bass duties?

I see there is a 12" version.
I use an old Dahlquist LP-1 crossover currently, and should to give this a try in place of a single passive sub in the corner.

thanks for the info

Xavier - many thanks - now that I have an idea what to do with tuning, I'll just have to give it a try with the K-12s.

Xcortes,
I believe Marchand offers a kit version of their tube based crossover. I'll have to take another look at their site.
Regards,
John

Just checked it, didn't see any kits but what they offer is pricey!

Xavier - if you want, ping me with an email. I might have something to help with a tube crossover that is collecting dust.
