Title: S.E.X. - Film cap summary
Post by: adamct on May 17, 2013, 04:36:04 AM
I've ordered a S.E.X. 2.1 kit and plan on ordering a set of film caps to install after I have the kit up and running in stock form.

The kit comes with the following caps:

2x 0.1 μF 630V metallized polypropylene capacitors (F104K)
2x 1.5μF 630V metallized polypropylene capacitors (Solen)
2x 22μF 450V electrolytic capacitors
2x 100μF 450V electrolytic capacitors
2x 220μF 250V electrolytic capacitors
2x 1,000μF 35V electrolytic capacitors
1x 10,000 μF 10V electrolytic capacitor

From browsing through the boards here, it sounds as though there are three sets of caps that are (at least theoretically) worth "upgrading":

1.   The "interstage" caps - the 0.1uf caps (These would be replaced.)
2.   The "parafeed" or "coupling" caps - 1.5uf caps (These would be replaced.)
3.   The "power stage" caps:
         - the 22uf (terminals 16-17 and 36-37) caps (These would be bypassed.) and
         - the 1,000uf (terminals 12-15 and 32-35) caps.  (These would also be bypassed.)
While there is some flexibility in terms of values, using the rule of thumb of using caps with 1% of the capacitance of the caps being bypassed, I would propose to bypass these with .22uf and 10uf caps (possibly something smaller than 10uf for the second cap).

Is that a fair summary? Anything I got wrong? And out of curiosity, what does the "F104K" mean with regard to the 0.1uf caps?

Best regards,
Adam

I assume it is OK to use 0.1uf 600V Teflon caps, instead of the stock 0.1uf 630V caps? Just want to confirm in light of the slightly lower voltage rating.

Yes, the KK Teflon 600V will be fine, and sound good.

Thanks, Grainger.
