Title: dac source weirdness
Post by: khingila on March 24, 2015, 04:12:06 AM
i have not had a chance to do much but fool around a bit with the dac, but am confused about something that perhaps someone can explain. connecting the digital out on my cd player (njoe tjoeb) w/ spdif gives a very nice sound that i am hard put as yet to describe in contrast to the usual player output. but connecting via the same means to the digital out of my dvd player yields horrible glitchy digital noise and a readout on the dac of '48'. any ideas?

I have been following the posts about connecting sources and cycling the power on the Bottlehead DAC.  Are you powering it down before swapping your sources then powering it up?

yes; powered off and on, rotated input switch, disconnected redundant output cables ...nothing seemed to change it.

Are you saying that with both sources, you are using the coaxial S/PDIF input and not the optical TOSLINK? Does your DVD player have an optical out?

Are you using the same disc to test?

Have you used other DACs with these devices?

If you are playing a 44.1k CD in your DVD player and the DAC is seeing a 48K sample rate, you may need to adjust some setting in the DVD player's settings menu.

sorry, i could have been more specific. playing a cd in the cd player connected from digital out via spdif to the dac works great, display showing 44.1. playing a dvd in the dvd player connected from digital out via spdif gives glitchy mashup, display showing 48. i have not attempted to connect from the dvd player w/ toslink, although it does have that output. this is the only dac i've ever touched!

Make sure your DVD player's digital output is set to PCM and not bitstream.

there's was nothing quite that straightforward, but i changed all 6 audio settings to something other than what they were and now it sounds great. thanks!
