Title: Tode Maintenance
Post by: Alonzo on March 12, 2017, 08:48:20 PM
It's time for the yearly guitar and amp cleanup and maintenance.  Are there any items I should be looking for on the Tode?  I have a loose EL84 socket that I'll be looking at, are there any items should be checked or can be upgraded while I'm in there?

Of course you could look at different speakers. I used a no longer made Weber Chicago series speaker in my own Tode. It has a lot bigger magnet and a different cone. I guess something similar might be one of the Weber 8s with bigger ceramic magnets (none of the alnicos will fit). However the biggest gain can probably be made by trying an external cabinet with bigger speakers. I have a 4x12 cab with Celestion speakers that makes for a very different, fatter sound with Tode, and a single Eminence Legend 12 in an old wall mount cabinet that falls somewhere in between and works nicely for jazz.

I've only used it into a bigger cabinet once, don't have any issues with the amount of sound coming out of the little speaker.  Perfect for a practice amp.  I will source a replacement to put on the shelf, the grandkids like to feel the music and touch the speaker.  There's an accident waiting to happen.

Direct replacement is the Signature 8S, 4ohms. Think it is marked as such on the back.
