I have been running my turntable (RP6) with it sitting on top of a 2" granite base spiked to a walnut shelf inside a cabinet. I have had this and other TTs in this configuration for many, many years and thought this helped to isolate the TT from outside influences.
Today I removed the granite slab and set the RP6 directly on a 1" walnut shelf in the same place in the cabinet.
I have spent the last four hours listening to some very familiar albums (Al DeMiola - Splendido Hotel, Sonny Rollins - Sax Colossus, Diana Krall - All For You, and The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Live at Carnegie Hall).
All of these familiar albums immediately opened up - noticeably more detail and air with better bass and percussion presentation.
I kept listening wondering if it was my imagination. I have concluded that the granite slab was not the best mat for my TTs.
Is it possible the thick granite "sucked the life" out of the music?
I have read much about different bases, pads, and isolation platforms for TTs and never found a definitive product that most could agree on and that I was willing to throw down the bucks for.
For now, the granite block is sitting in the garage waiting to be repurposed.
