Below are a couple of diagrams showing how to: 1) connect the Goldpint 4PID-3 selector switch to the Foreplay III, and 2) a wiring diagram connecting two Goldpt attenuators to the 4PID-3 switch.  I would appreciate any feedback pointing out errors. I have also created a Web page showing the same diagrams (better contrast.) http://www.co-bw.com/Audio_DIY_Foreplay_Goldpoint.htm

NOTE: The link below provides resistors for a 20K attenuator that can be used in place of the Sweet Whispers (Sweet Whispers is rated at 15K.) These are .1% IRC resistors. Here is the link for the Mouser IRC project (all of the resistors are IRC's).

Here is a calculator for that you can use for constructing a stepped attenuator: http://homepages.tcp.co.uk/~nroberts/atten.html

Below are the instruction in English. This is easier to read on my site, since I am able to use bold more easily and change font sizes. http://www.co-bw.com/Audio_DIY_Foreplay_Goldpoint.htm

Goldpoint Selector Switch Model: 4P-3T-D [4 Poles (circuits), 3 Positions, 1 Deck] To avoid confusion I will use Quadrants instead of Poles when describing the diagrams. Our variables will be Q-Quadrant/Pole, and P for Position.

The 4P switch has 4 Quadrants, and they will be named Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4 starting from the top and going clockwise/right. Each Circuit has 4 Positions (1, 2, 3, and C) and will be named P1, P2, P3, and Pc. We need now worry about the decks since we are using only one.

Before beginning, notice the order of the positions in each quadrant. For Q1 and Q2, the switch goes from 3, 2, 1, to c. For Q3 and A4 it is the opposite when reading from the top (c, 1, 2, and 3), but the same when reading clockwise 3, 2, 1, c).

Connecting the Switch

Quadrant I
Q1-P3 resistor goest to 29U
Q1-P2 resistor goest to 30U
Q1-P1 resistor goest to 36U
Q1-Pc nothing for now

Quadrant II
Left Input #3:

Q2-P3 black wire, red wire goes to 29U, and drain wire connects to 28U

Left Input #2:
Q2-P2 black wire, red wire goes to 30U, and drain wire connects to 28U

Left Input #3:
Q2-P1 black wire, red wire goes to 36U, and drain wire connects to 28U
Q2-Pc nothing for now

Quadrant III
Right Input #1:
Q3-P1 black wire, red wire goes to 20U, and drain wire connects to 28U

Right Input #2:
Q3-P2 black wire, red wire goes to 26U, and drain wire connects to 28U

Right Input #3:
Q2-P3 black wire, red wire goes to 27U, and drain wire connects to 28U
Q3-Pc nothing for now

Quadrant IV
Q4-P3 resistor goes to 20U
Q4-P2 resistor goes to 26U
Q4-P1 resistor goes to 27U
Q4-Pc nothing for now

Connecting Attenuators to Switch

Right Channel Attenuator
Attenuator Ground connects to 16U and Attenuator OUT connects to 17U
Attenuator side: STP black connects to Attenuator ground and red to Attenuator IN
Switch side: STP black connects to Q3-Pc, red connects to Q4-Pc, and drain connects to 28U

Left Channel Attenuator

Attenuator Ground connects to 40U and Attenuator OUT connects to 37U
Attenuator side: STP black connects to Attenuator ground and red to Attenuator IN
Switch side: STP black connects to Q1-Pc, red connects to Q2-Pc, and drain connects to 28U

In the first diagram the right channel grounds are in reversed order at the switch. I'd add more text on color code, i.e. the black lines are the ground, and red/purple/brown are signal.

In the second diagram the hot and ground are reversed, again on the right channel.

I didn't check the terminal numbers (manual is not at hand right now).

Thanks. I liked the idea of a key. I think all is well now.

Right side is still reversed (hot to ground, ground to hot) on the second diagram.

Paul, I think the bottom image had not finished uploading when you looked at it the second time. Caused mass confusion on my end; a good learning exercise. I compared the wire colors to DebK's photographs and they seem to be the same. Please let me know if they are still incorrect.

I also have a couple of "projects" with Mouser that list all of the Visahy-Dale reisistors and IRC resistors needed to build the attenuators. I will post the links once everything is finalized.

Thanks a lot.

Cool, and thanks a lot.

I will post the links to the bills of sale for Vishay-Dale and IRC resistors from mouser.com shortly.

The English instructions have been inserted. If you see any errors, then please point them out. Thanks

just wanted to thank you for doing this - I just swapped in a new goldpoint selector and this guide made it super easy!
