The problem with Aermacchi was that the Harley dealers didn't promote the bikes. They sold very well in Europe after AMF sold the company to Cagiva. Harley seems always to be pretty much stuck in a time warp. Buells were great bikes too, but Harley didn't do well promoting them either. If they had they would be in much better shape these days, with bikes that are more technically comparable to the Japanese and European bikes that are selling well. Now that 60s era boomers are getting too old to ride Harley is in deep doo-doo.

My daughter worked at Harley Milwaukee, early 2000's, in their communications department. She was getting her masters at Marquette.  She had some great examples!  At Harley, quality management has been in short supply for half 'a century!  The Boomer's bailed them out and Harley management failed to recognize the inevitable slope of the product life cycle on the downside.  Only time will tell.
