Hi
I am waiting for my new Bottlehead Crack. What is the exact size of the aluminum plate ?

And what is the overall size of the wood base? lenght x width x height

I will make a special wood chassis for this tube ampli.

Thank you in advance

Hi reglys,

The chassis plate dimensions are given as 10" x 6" on the Crack product description web page (see 'In Depth'). I didn't see a thickness specified; I think it is around 0.080"-0.10" thick. I didn't see base dimensions, though someone else may post them. The material from which the bases are made is roughly 1" x 4" lumber size, which is about 3/4" thick by 3.5" width. The top plate rests in a rabbet cut into the upper inner edges of the pieces of the base; the cut is about 1/8" by 1/8"; again, someone else may post specifics.

I think the width and length of the base are somewhat arbitrary, so long as the top plate is supported and the inside surfaces of the base don't intrude on under-chassis components. Whether height is critical or not is arguable, I've seen posts about some Bottlehead products indicating the height affects airflow and cooling of components. However, if you choose to mod your crack, as many do, the standard height is helpful to accommodate a power supply choke or larger capacitors.

Thank you very much for your help Caffeinator

I will plan for a cherry wood base of 7'' x 11'' overall with 3/4'' thickness and a height of 4''. I will put some rubber pads underneat the wood base to help air convection. 0.1'' thick for the aluminum plate makes a lot of sens. I will put a rabbet of 1/4" all aroound my wood base to support the plate.

Cheers

Make the rabbet only about 1/8" wide. Otherwise it may not clear some components near the edge of the chassis. The outside measurement of our 3/4" thick wood bases is just a bit smaller than 7-1/2" x 11-1/2". I believe the Crack panel is currently .080" thick. I'll measure one tomorrow when I'm back at the office and report here if it is thicker.

Thank you very much Dr. B.

This is a very good advice for the rabbet.
