Will thses go together?
I already have the Alerions w/DX-65s, A 2A3 amp, and Bruckner recordings.
The 2A3 although good and enfgaging is missing some of the weight of Orchestral music.
Will a 300B amp do it?
Any Paramounts, Paramours in NYC?

I have Alerions. Very good speakers, whose bass response is simply limited by their size. Paramounts with 300Bs may sound better than your amp on midbass, but of course we haven't heard your amp. Best bet is to get a subwoofer and run it from about 60Hz down. It's the horn cutoff that is not able to reach the deep bass that is probably the reason for the lack of weight.

Good point Doc, I am using a Fi X w/ Mq OTs, which I like a lot. Been listening to big orchestral and thought more power may do the trick, Also curious about a 45 amp like the Stereomour (got the bug for a new amp). I've run 45s in the X and I can hear more detail and akind of a more even keeld neutrality, so I wondeer what a real 45 optimized circuit will sound like w/the Alerions...

Doc's counsel about horn cutoff is sage advice. If you go with a sub or two, I suggest looking into the Omega powered subs which use very quick and tactile hemp drivers. It is hard to find subs quick enough to really disappear when used with good horns.

Cheers, Hank

I don't know the sensitivity of the DX-65, but if it is less that 99 dB I would suspect that, even though it would probably deliver the kind of detail and resolution you are looking for, the 45 might not deliver enough power for orchestral music

PerroNegro,

I will be building a pair of the Alerions this summer and will use them with the Stereomour that I will most likely build for 45/2a3 operation, and I also have a pair of Fi 2a3 monos which sound really great with my other speakers which are roughly the same sensitivity as the Alerions, though they do have an 8 inch driver and my room is small -- about 150 SF.  You don't say how large your room is, and you might be able to get mileage out of a 45 by limiting the lower freq cutoff of the amp and using a pair of subs.  Of course that's more money, more complexity and as Hank mentioned, matching a sub to a horn isn't easy, though easier with back horns than front loaded.

Another option to consider would be to build the paramounts as 300b amps but wire the filaments for 2.5v and use the high-power 2a3 tubes such as the JJ, Sophia, and I think the solid plate EML will also handle that power, but I wouldn't want to be the guinea pig on that test.  I would probably take this route myself if I had the money as the alerions will be in the living room, not in my office/listening room.

HTH,

Jim
