Hello,

I received my Sennheiser 650 today (I have a Crack on order).

I plugged them in an old Cambridge DVD player, but that will not do.

Is it possible to use the Paramount (8ohm tap actually) via some connection, or would I need to modify the circuit, or is it just impossible?

I am asking because I know that some are using the Paramount with with their AKG K1000, understanding that these are difficult to drive and have special requirements.

I still do not understand much about audio electronics yet, but I can follow instructions. However, I would rather not modify the circuit if that means that I cannot use the Paramount with my speakers anymore. In which case, I will just wait for the Crack.

Thanks,

Richard

You can make up an adapter cable witch connects to the Paramount outputs and feeds a TRS headphone jack. You may even be able to buy one. You'd have to disconnect the speakers to make them quiet when listening to phones, but otherwise I don't see any problem.

650's on DC-heated 300B's should be truly killer. I have the same cans, and they are great with the Crack and S.E.X......but what I wouldn't give to hear them over DHT's!

Actually I'd put my money on Smack for the 650s. The 300Bs should sound best, I agree, if they were the only tube in the signal path. But there are two gain stages in a Paramount - you are hearing the 5670 or 12AT7 driver depending upon the version of the kit, and the 300B. In a Smack there's a single gain stage very similar to the Paramount driver circuit. So essentially you are only hearing the "driver" tube without the potential added coloration of a second stage, and thus it will tend to have wee bit better resolution.

I have a highly modified pair of Paramounts that I use with my AKG 702 and Grado 325is cans. The sound is absolutely fantastic. The cable is easy to make, I used a Neutrik connector premounted on a wall plate - a utlilty box - 4 ft piece of speaker cable and some cheap bananas.
