This only occurs when the volume is turned all the way down. Turning it up even only slightly, and it goes away. Apart from the obvious solution of not turning the volume knob all the way down, any ideas as to what is going on? Would this be indicative of any problems elsewhere? TIA

I'm guessing that you're hitting a spot on the lower end of the pot which is now an open circuit -- meani g that the wiper is not making contact with the resistive element.  Do you have another pot you can replace the existing one with?

Thanks Jim, I suspected it might be something along those lines. It has been my intent to replace it for some time, I even have a replacement. Perhaps after the holidays.
