Sounds like a nice project.  It is good to get a recommendation from a fellow Bottlehead that a vendor is truly responsive.  Sometimes I sit and wonder if I had placed the order since I get nothing back.

On a different subject, something must be wrong with my browser.  There are question marks within diamonds wherever there is an apostrophe, single quote, in the post above.

Is it only me?

I wrote this up in Word 2007 and pasted it in.  I'd bet that wasn't my best move of the day...

Can you be very specific on which characters appear broken?  I'll attempt to fix it.

Mainly apostrophes and such - first word " I've" for example.  Save as a text file, open in notepad our other simple text editor, then copy paste might help. This removes all formatting too.

It's been copied out to a .txt file and pasted back in again.  Any better?

Rather than another post - I just looked at this from work and I get the strange characters there as well.  May have a fix that I'll work on tonight.  Has to do with the way the web page is developed and the character set used to put the text in with.

I see the same thing.  It must be Mozilla in combination with the pasted file.  I use Mozilla.  And I have often pasted from Word.  We'll figure it out.   This is not the only post I have seen them in.

Great write up! The HD580 / 600 / 650 are very receptive to replacement cables. If I recall correctly, Bottlehead even offered a Senn replacement cable with a right angle connector for a time. I found that I liked the Cardas cable synergized well with the HD600, the HD600 being a tad forward in the upper-midrange which was warmed up a bit by the Cardas cable. The HD650 starts off a little warm so UP-OCC solid core in Teflon seems to work a tad better in my humble opinion.

One thing you can try with future cables is filling the little cavity in the Senn plugs with hot glue before heatshrinking them. Another thing to try is sleeving the wire with Techflex nylon multifilament which helps reduce the microphonics you were experiencing when the cable rubs against you.

I'm glad you like the cable. It can be a lot of very careful work but totally worth it. I also know what you mean about the techflex, it's hard plastic so it transmits any noise from being rubbed right into the cable. I left it off of mine and am glad. I'm casually looking around at different cloth-wrap options that protect the wire but are soft enough to be quiet and not add too much stiffness.

Update:  Redid the can end.

I just couldn't stand it anymore!  Pulled all the heatshrink and techflex off, unsoldered the ends.  Pulled another 6" or so of insulation and shield off so I had longer leads.  Used a cable pant and minimal heatshrink.  Curled the heat shrink at the connector ends so it would hold the cable away from my body.  Much better!
