Playing around with my Raspberry Pi and backing up SD cards and testing them to see if they are bootable.  One of my backup cards is pre-configured for the HiFiMeDIY DAC so I plugged one in and am giving it a listen.  It's just like tube rolling, only with DAC's.  Typically been listening with a JDS Labs ODAC on Crack and hadn't gotten around to rolling DAC's much.

I strongly encourage any user of Crack that uses a digital source to buy some cheap DAC's and roll them.  I'm thinking this has to stay this way.  I'm running a Mullard box plate CV4003 (12AU7) that is sweet but I wanted just a little more on the high end.  The DAC swap is given me pure bliss here.

Also for what it's worth a Raspberry Pi would mount sweetly between the two tubes and looks pretty cool, kinda Dynaco ST70 looking with the circuit board on top.   I'm contemplating mounting the Raspberry Pi on top of my next crack kit and maybe mounting the DAC on front or on one side.  Kind of a self contained Crack Squeezebox.

Only two concerns.   Maybe too much heat for the Raspberry Pi and having a Wi-Fi Dongle that close to the signal path although I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be a problem.  Just for giggles I held the working Pi over the Crack Chassis and didn't hear any EMI or interference.

This might be pretty cool.

Yea, I have bought a number of DAC kits off e-bay. I don't feel guilty at all when I rip out the op-amps and kluge in a tube stage or transformer. lots of fun...John
