And, assuming these are the gold standard for stepped attenuators, which series is optimum, in your experience?

Not sure about Gold standard but i've always used them in the Signal path, and for my attenuators.  Some people swear by PRP Metal Film or Tantalum resistors.

I usually source mine from Mouser, RN55 or RN60 series.

Digi-Key has them and offer a first class mail delivery option.  That beats $17 for a box with next to nothing in it.

Thanks, guys. Well, it turns out that Mouser is the place, after all.  (I have gotten in the habit of buying from Digi-Key, but they had some pretty steep minimum order requirements for the values they offer.)  Anyway, I just completed an order to populate a GlassWare A3 hybrid series/ladder stepper for an Aikido linestage. The resistors were 10 cents each. Got a few extra of each for the parts bin. First class mail was available to a home address, but not to my office. Even so, priority mail for $6.99 wasn't all that bad.
