Pot is cooked, huh? Sorry, couldn't resist.
Would this be a worthwhile place to upgrade to something other than the stock part from BH?

No, if you've cooked the stock volume pot, most of the more expensive potentiometers are considerably more fragile.

The issue with this particular mod for me was that the bottom ground tab was difficult to reach for solder removal and without complete solder removal the terminal hole was a tight squeeze for the resistor.
I like to think I'd have more luck starting with a clean slate even if the pot is more delicate (says the guy who's already melted power switches on 2 builds)

Just wanted to close the book on this in case anyone is interested. I swapped the pot with a Pec 100K ohm. This did require very minor drilling in the chassis plate to widen both the hole for the pot and the orientation tab. There is a lot of room around the terminals of this pot which made the job very smooth. I re-completed the original planned mod with the resistors to pad the pot. Everything works and sounds great. Thanks for everyone's help with this.
