Thank you, Paul.  I'm trying to get this straight in my head, not necessarily the easiest of tasks!

If I understand you correctly, then, the +9V used on the gate for switching would be referenced to signal ground, and the gate would be returned to signal ground in order to restore the "off" or high-resistance condition.

Using solid-state devices makes so much more sense here.....now to see if I can get this to work! I may need to draw out a schematic and post it for the Joppa stamp of approval, or wait for somebody else to draw one, though - like JC, I'm having a hard time picturing this due to all the grounding funkiness. I'm an auditory, not a visual learner......
